TYT MD-9600 Firmware Update Available

8/31/2017 Update - Firmware version 3.29 has been released and the download link was added below. Please download the 3.29 firmware and refer to it anywhere 3.28 is mentioned below. The new version fixes a bug where the display would remain lit after the radio was powered off.

Some of the TYT MD-9600 owners reported an issue loading channels into their radio using the programming software. The software was reporting that the data was being written successfully, but some or all channels were not accessible on the radio.

TYT MD-9600 Upgrading the Programming Software Guide
To address this issue, TYT released an updated firmware version (3.28) and an updated version of the programming software (1.18). You can download these updates, along with the firmware loader, at the links below:

TYT MD-9600 Upgrading the Programming Software Guide

  1. Regarding the newest update. I received a brand new TYT MD-9600 from a local ham radio shop before the weekend. The radio came with the latest software installed. I wasted the entire weekend trying to make it work. I have a lot of Chinese radios of wich all work flawless. This one however, has been a pain.

Firs, none of my two computers would recognize the programming cable (normally detected after the radio is connected). I spent one day deleting and reconnecting and trying every possible way to make it work. In the end it started working.

Second. The supplied CD contained all possible TYT software for older models EXCEPT from MD-9600. I had to go online and download it.

Third. When programmed, I noticed that of the four programmable buttons in the front, only P1 and P4 worked. The two in the middle just cannot be programmed, even if i do it through the software. Tried million times.

Fourth. I programmed two zones into the radio. The channels in the zones are not visible nowhere. I have made a scan list, but when activating scan, it scans only the entire frequency band. No way I may get it to scan channels. (Maybe this is me not understanding how to use it, but I do not think so).

Fift. Sound issue. A VERY loud "pop"/"Scratch" sound comes out of the loudspeker every time I press a button. The sound is so loud it damages the hearing. I disabled tones for the buttons and the problem was gone. But it is not supposed to be like this.

Sixth. I tried to upload a BMP to the startup screen with no luck. I made it in the desired size and format, but there was no way to upload it. The software told me it had to be in the right size and bitsize, but all was correct. Still no result.

Seventh. The microphone light is on ALL the time, even when the radio is powered on.

I tried to reinstall the latest software twice, but no change.

So, I cannot strongly enought recommend staying away from this radio. Waste your money on something else.

  2. Apparently in the past year and a half a lot has changed about this radio.

First; I had no issues with the cable right out of the box. I'm using a Desktop with Windows 10.

Second; My box did not contain a CD with software so I went straight to downloading the link from this Blog.

Third; Programming all four buttons for both a short and long press was very easy and I have had no problems using either mode of any of the four buttons.

Fourth; I have seven zones with no less than 20 channels in each of the two channel lists. A short press of P3 will cycle up through the zones and a long press of P3 will cycle the other direction. Every channel in each list of every zone displays with no problems and works just fine.

Fifth; While the Alert sounds are louder than audio received on any frequency, it is not so loud that I get a complaint from the XYL sitting on the other side of the room.

Sixth; I'm not sure where Anonymous got the idea that the monochrome screen could accomodate a .BMP image but there is nothing that I can find that indicates this radio is capable of that.

Seventh; The backlight of the Microphone is an adequate level such that I can see every button with no problem. The Microphone activation light works just fine and only when the PTT is pressed.

The Description of the radio by the Commercial seller indicated that CHIRP could be used to program the radio. As of this post CHIRP does not support the TYT MD-9600. I found a Code Plug with seven DMR Repeaters and 10 TG's per Repeater, as well as quite a few VHF and UHF Repeaters. Importing the Code Plug was a breeze. Importing a Contacts .CSV file was also a breeze. Even adding channels for other repeaters was not too difficult. The only thing I would wish for is a larger Contacts capability. This radio can only have 1000 Contacts, I would have liked 10,000 at least.

Second. I placed it in download mode (Orange button and P1 button) and turned it on at power switch as instructed. All appeared well with screen flashing. Still couldn't connect to radio, and finally shut it down. Now the radio will NOT start. Where to from here? Help.

  4. I had the same problem with the computer not recognizing the programming cable. Updating the USB drivers in Windows 10 solved that problem.

  5. Can we have the usb driver somewhere safe? A file that works and don't mesh up and stop working ? Thanks.
